How the keyboard tester works

Every time you press a key, the browser fires a KeyboardEvent. This tool listens for keydown and keyup events and maps each event's event.code — the physical key position on your keyboard — to the corresponding key on the visual layout.

Unlike event.key, which changes based on your OS language settings and modifier state, event.code always refers to the same physical key regardless of what character it produces. This makes it ideal for hardware diagnostics.

The tester tracks every unique key tested, detects simultaneous presses, and monitors for hardware anomalies like chattering (rapid repeat events) or stuck keys (keydown without a matching keyup).
